Improving Global Competitiveness: Human Resource Development for Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Workers in Malaysia

Abstract

This chapter examines the human resource manageme(HRM) practices of Malaysian information communication and technology (ICT) firms. lt elicits the challenges that Malaysian ICT firms face in managing ICT workers and examines associated public policy issues, including recruitment, human capital development (HCD) and supply side constraint issues – the latter has the potential of hampering the Malaysian government's goal of creating a knowledge based society by 2020. This research suggests that the continued development of Malaysia's ICT industry is not merely a function of its ability to produce more ICT graduates per se. Rather, Malaysia needs to produce ICT graduates with the skills demanded by the locaI lCT industry.
