| Abstract | Chapter 11 provides an overview of what has recently become one of the most frequently diagnosed disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The chapter discusses how the specific characteristics of ASD can impact on a student's academic and social development throughout their school life. It provides strategies and approaches that can be used by teachers to adapt the teaching and learning situation to meet the needs of students specifically in the areas of communication, social skills and behaviour. Issues that are highlighted and discusses include the importance of developing a safe learning environment for students with ASD as well as the importance of collaborating with parent. |
