Abstract This article aims to make a contribution on two fronts: managing people in Australian hospitals and research methodology. The article introduces and explains an innovative data collection method: adapting and using the ‘miracle question’ in the field of human resource management (HRM). Researchers in other fields have used the miracle question, but it has not been used hitherto in HRM research. The purpose of the paper is to examine staff responses from three hospitals on how to improve hospital performance by focusing less on problems but more on solutions.
